Amazon buys TV app maker Pushbutton

Amazon is acquiring Pushbutton, a UK company that develops interactive apps for connected TVs. Pushbutton also is the partner that developed apps to put Amazon's recently acquired LoveFilm movie rental service on the PlayStation 3 and "smart" TVs.
Connected, or "smart," TV is a hybrid of traditional television and new media like apps, Internet TV and interactive content, and the market is growing rapidly. With the acquisition, Amazon gains a foothold in the connected TV market as well as entry into YouView, a UK consortium of public broadcasters and Internet companies. Pushbutton is a content partner for the yet-to-be-released service.
“Pushbutton has a strong reputation for delivering amazing user experiences on connected devices,” said Greg Greeley, Amazon’s VP of European retail in a statement. “They were instrumental in helping launch the Lovefilm player through a variety of devices, and we look forward to helping them continue to innovate on behalf of customers.”
The nine-year-old Pushbutton, whose clients include Disney, Virgin Media and the BBC, will remain an independent entity based out of the UK. Financial terms of the deal weren't released.
This is the second UK company to be acquired by Amazon; in July, it gobbled up online bookseller The Book Depository.
